“I need go potty,”

Those words are music to a mother ears, especially when you have more than one in Diapers. There is no magic to it mom you can do it the hard way and force the issue or you can be consistent and follow your child. I suggest the latter .

  1. There is no right age to start introducing the potty, Children watch you and want to do what you do, that is when you get a potty seat and step stool. Usually age 15 months and beyond. We would like to be potty trained by age 3 years, but don’t rush it.
  2. Wait for signs of readiness such as an interest in the potty , words for pee and poop, staying dry for more than 4 hours, predictable bowel movements, the ability to stop and start urine, discomfort with soiled diapers.
  3. Do not be afraid to let your little one see how and when you use the potty.
  4. Talk about big kid undies, and have fun shopping for some.
  5. When your child is ready get yourself , the babysitter and the rest of the family ready. Plan to be home for the weekend no sudden trips etc, talk about plans to wear big kid undies that weekend.
  6. Put on the undies. Ask to be told whenever he needs to go potty. Start by checking in every ½ hour to remind him, after a couple hours don’t ask just put him on the potty and give him time. Repeat the process all day. Next day increase the interval to an hour for your checks and continue until you are up to 4 hours. Then gradually decrease the number of times you remind him . In the subsequent weeks he will start to resist strongly when he does not have to go. Sometimes mom knows he need to go, its been 4 hours and he drank 16oz of fluid, then you calmly take him to the potty and give him some time.
  7. Place him on the potty after a meal around the time he usually has a bowel movement.
  8. Give him a few months and wait for complete dry nights before using underwear at nighttime.
  9. Accidents are not to be punished. Please calmly reassure him these will occur , and encourage him not to wait too long before going to the potty. Successes are to be celebrated with much excitement…remember he/she wants nothing more than to please you.

Wait for your child to show you he is ready and you can do this in a few weeks
